Sprouting Genius – Doritos Crash the Super Bowl Entry
After weeks of preparation and a lot of hard work by all involved, I’m proud to post our entry in the Doritos Crash The Super Bowl Commercial Contest. Little Z did an outstanding job when we weren’t testing his patience by plopping him in his chair over and over again. I’d like to personally thank my beautiful wife for her help and participation as well as Daniel Redman for the hilarious fight song. This commercial also couldn’t have been made in any comfortable sense without the help of Eitan Hagler.
I feel we were able to create what was in my head, and that’s saying something considering the short time it took from realization of the full concept to delivery. This isn’t even mentioning three non-actors and a 20 month-old who is without a doubt the most professional of us all. I’d like to personally apologize to our house for all the abuse and stabbing it with a knife. I paid dearly cleaning up beer-soaked flour and hot sauce that was cemented on the floor. I’d also like to apologize to Z for making it OK to throw brussels sprouts but not his meals every day as he now thinks all food must be thrown.
We’ve been accepted as an entry so we are officially in the running. Hopefully people like it. We had such a fun time producing this piece, and are now officially exhausted.
I will most likely look for another location for future productions since our house sits within a rock’s throw of the airport. Usually pretty easy to predict, but it just so happens that on a day we were shooting some illegal aliens were caught in a boat and I guess they need every helicopter in Southern California to round them up. The perils of living in paradise.
My Creation of the Logo for the Band CoastRiders
This logo was created for the band CoastRiders. CoastRiders is a corporate caliber Jimmy Buffett style band, beach music melting together of Jimmy Buffett, Zac Brown, and Marshal Tucker. This is a video showing the creation of this logo in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.
My Creation of the Logo for Bergie’s Pub
This logo was created for the new burger and brew joint Bergie’s in Old Town San Diego. The video includes all the revisions made after client feedback a long the way. My client asked at first that he wanted a cartoon version of himself drawn in a fun way carrying a burger and a pitcher of beer. At first his thought was to have him walking with authority, as if “delivering the goods” confidently. As the process started, new ideas blossomed out of the art. He wanted the character wearing a fedora, which I’ve learned is constantly on his dome. I decided a bowling style shirt went well with the hat, but we ended up with the Hawaiian shirt, which goes even better. As I talked with him more, I learned that he was quite an accomplished skateboarder back in the Dogtown and Z-boy days so it was a natural progression to add a skate to the art. Soon after the logo was finished he asked to also add his girlfriend Karen since she was an integral part of the business, so I just made it a longboard and put them both on it, sharing the duties of carrying the burger and brew.
